The Kodak Theater of Hollywood
and the fun Hollywood & Highland Center!
The 80th annual Academy Awards Ceremony for 2008 is coming! When will it be held? That date will be Sunday, February 24, 2008!
And just WHERE did the Academy Awards Ceremony take place? In Hollywood, California's Kodak Theater--a place where YOU can take a tour on your family vacation getaway to Los Angeles!
For most of its history, the Academy Awards didn't have a home of its own. The very first Academy
Awards ceremony---way back in 1929!---took place at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. As the years passed, the Academy Awards Ceremony took place in various places throughout Hollywood and greater Los Angeles---the Ambassador and Biltmore Hotels, Grauman's Chinese Theater, the Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium, the Pantages Theater, the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium and the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. These are all nice venues, to be sure...but the world-famed Academy Awards Ceremony needed a HOME...a permanent place for "Oscar" to call his own. And so, a home was built! "Oscar's" new home is the sparkling Kodak Theater in the Hollywood and Highland Center on Hollywood Boulevard. Not only did the Academy Awards Ceremony get a home with this new building, but Hollywood Boulevard itself became completely revitalized!
YOU can get in on some Oscar fun when you visit Hollywood, California---by taking a tour of the lovely Kodak Theater! A guide will take you inside the famous auditorium and explain all the little known details about the facilities that you may never hear about otherwise. (Plus, when you watch the Oscar awards program on ABC TV, you'll be able to say to yourself, "Hey, I know that place very well!")
News! Cirque du Soleil signs deal with Kodak Theater! The Kodak Theater will get a PERMANENT new tennant---the popular Cirque du Soleil. Though showtimes won't begin until 2010, residents and visitors of Hollywood, California will have a full 10 years to enjoy a special, only-in-LA brand-new Cirque du Soleil, which will put on 8 performances per week. Every year, these performances will take a month-long hiatus while the Kodak Theater prepares for the Oscar awards ceremonies.
Kodak Theater, Home of the Academy Awards Ceremony
In the first photo of the Kodak Theater (above), you saw the sweeping red tiled staircase leading up to the theater's entry doors. In this picture of the Kodak Theater on your left, you see the theater's beautiful and majestic atrium, one of the many "showpiece" features of this outstanding edifice. The Kodak Theater auditorium itself was designed to be elegant, and to resemble the grand opera houses of Europe. Yet simultaneously, the Kodak Theater auditorium is the utmost example of a venue boasting state-of-the-art features for broadcasting. (Not only does this new Hollywood landmark televise the Academy Awards Ceremonies, but ALSO many other widely diverse events, from the American Idol finals...to the Latin Grammy Awards...to the American Film Institute lifetime achievement awards...to the BET Entertainment Awards...and more! And yet, the general public gets to use the Kodak Theater, as well---both on guided public "behind-the-scenes" tours AND as a venue for terrific live performances! At the Kodak Theater, you'll get to see a rotating schedule of singers, orchestras and bands, ballet...even touring Broadway productions. So, except for about a month when the Academy is preparing for the actual awards ceremony itself, the doors of the Kodak Theater are thrown open for all to enjoy!
